BALTIMORE, Md. — Chaos erupted Tuesday afternoon in the 6200 block of Park Heights Avenue in Baltimore, Maryland after a police officer was shot during what authorities described as an “active shooter incident,” sending officers scrambling for cover and triggering a major response from the Baltimore Police Department.
Police say an officer was shot and transported to the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center.
Officials said the officer suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Authorities confirmed the suspect in the shooting was also shot during the confrontation. The condition of the suspect was not immediately known.
Police warned the public to avoid the surrounding area as officers secured the scene.
According to the Baltimore Police Department, officers were responding to an “active shooter incident” in the neighborhood.
Crime Beat Nation has learned that officers were in the 6200 block of Park Heights Avenue when a person fired shots from a window and officers were struck.
Police said one of the officers was transported to Shock Trauma while another officer suffered a non-life threatening wound.
During the gunfire, officers were forced to take cover behind vehicles as shots rang out.
Officers monitoring the situation reported hearing what was described as sniper fire coming from a house in the area, according to Broadcastify audio.
The shooting happened near the Agudath Israel of Baltimore synagogue.
The Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police said their President and State Trustee reported that “all involved members” are in “good spirits.”
Police say the investigation is ongoing and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
